Entertaining snowshoe tour via Sala Plauna to Fontanivas and through a gorge along the Rhine. (not signaled)
Details
Description
At the Acletta stream, after the bridge, we put on our snowshoes and follow the trail along the cross-country ski trail to the stone-lined hiking trail below the Sala Plauna. The descent down to the Rhine to Fontanivas is short. The campsite with the lake is in hibernation, it is very lonely and quiet here. After we have crossed Lukmanierstrasse the path becomes exciting. It leads us into a gorge, along the Rhine to Cuflons. Between the trees we have a view of the stream bed with remarkable whirlpools. We reach the other side of the stream via an old bridge that was already used by pack mules and pilgrims on their way over the Lukmanier Pass in the Middle Ages. We take the climb up to the Sontga Gada chapel slowly. The chapel is closed in winter, which is why we continue the hike on the winter hiking trail to the train station. We no longer need the snowshoes.
Geheimtipp
Be careful when crossing the Lukmanier Pass road.
Sicherheitshinweis
If there is a lot of fresh snow or if it is icy, the section between Fontanivas and Cuflons can be challenging.
In case of fresh snow, the trails are not pre-groomed. Don't overestimate your powers.
Ausrüstung
Safety equipment not required (avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel)
Directions
The route is not signposted as a snowshoe tour, we follow the summer signposts. At Disentis station we start in an easterly direction on the road to Cavardiras. After the last house on the right side we turn right, then left over the bridge and a short stretch along the trail. We reach the stone-lined path that leads us along the edge of Sala Plauna. The following descent to Fontanivas is short. We walk in the plain past the campsite to the Lukmanier pass road. Here we take off the snowshoes. On the bridge we cross the Rhine and then turn left onto a road. This leads into the gorge and after a few meters has only hiking trail width. At the bridge in Cuflons we get back to the other side of the Rhine and climb to the chapel Sontga Gada. On a winter hiking trail and low-traffic district streets, it goes back to the starting point without snowshoes.
